Don’t Stop : Recording Tap

Seems to have been a while since we wrote anything about, you know, actual records n that. So, in a bid to rectify, I’m going to post about every record I buy from now on. Probably.

Kicking off.

Various Artists – Don’t Stop: Recording Tap

Here’s a great compilation, with a great back story. Paranoid Harlem cult leader Jeremiah Yisrael set up a record label called “tap” back in the early 80s, recording a shed load (or more accurately, a garage load) of tunes which never really got anywhere, probably due to the tendencies of Jeremiah to avoid working with anyone outside his spiritual group, his less than attractive personal qualities, his tendency to alienate everyone he worked with and refusal to promote the music. Apart from that, a success all round.

Anyway, none of that matters to us, who can now pick up all these tunes in a cracking box set from Numero Group , who trawled through all 47 reels that they liberated from his garage. And there are some gems here, from disco to early hiphop he certainly knew how to put a tune together. There is the feeling whilst listening through that the tracks are reminiscent of others from that time, but that’s not to denigrate from the tunes themselves; whilst not wildly original there’s still some crackers, such as Missy Missy Dee and the Melody Crew giving us a blinder of an 80′s hiphop track.

The box set is worth the money, with liner notes, sheet music booklet, 3 * vinyl and CD. Go get it.
