Diggin for soul
You’ve probably heard the Scruff Southport Weekend soul mix right? Because if you haven’t, then you’re just wrong.
Anyway, I’ve been trying to dig up some of the tracks on there and figured someone else might be interested, so (in no particular order) here we go.
Gloria Scott – That’s what you say
Amazing tune this, with a brilliant vocal and super sweet backing produced by Barry White. This was her only full album, called “What am I gonna do” and the original goes for upwards of $200. There is however a repress about for the more amenable price of £8.99.
Next is Bill Spoon with “I bet you can’t love me one time”, because apparently ‘one time, girl, is all he needs’; is it just me who sees something slightly threatening in that line? It is? Oh right. Great tune though. Listen here
Slightly more difficult, and therefore expensive, this one. There’s apparently a repress knocking about with it on, but I can’t find a link to it. The EP it’s on is called “The one who really loves you”; I got mine from King Bee records in Chorlton, and there’s one here at the moment for about £30.
Donna McGhee – Mr Blindman comes from her 1978 LP “Make it last forever” – copies of which go for upwards of £100. You can get a copy of ‘Blindman’ on 12 for around £50, there’s a couple here.
Bobby Reed – The time is right for love on Bell records is a stonking screeching organ mother. Whatever one of those is. Sampled by Smith N Wessun & St Etienne it’s got a sweet sweet vocal from the Bobbster over a lovely sweet/sharp Northern Soul backing. You probably don’t even want to consider buying an original as prices are in the $5-700 region, but Expansion re-released it a few years ago, though I can’t find anything on their site to see if there’s any available, so get on ebay – there’s one here on ‘buy it now’ for a tenner.
That’s about as far as I’ve got for now, but I’m going to keep on it; Clausel’s ‘Let me love you’ has to be next on the list to get, though it’s pretty tricky to get hold of.
