Chopped Herring Records

About 7-8 years ago Chopped Herring Records released one of my favourite Manchester hiphop tracks of all time, ‘Out to Lunch’

Which if you’ve not bought, you probably should.

Then after that, they released my all time favourite cut-up album, “3 Sinister Syllables”; if you haven’t heard it, you really should track it down. A full CD that took 2 years to produce, it takes the ‘play-the-original-that-was-sampled-from-the-hiphop-track’ approach and takes it to a completely different level, creating a sample-laden album that stands on its own, not just as a mix/compilation CD. It’s an amazing piece of work that makes my head hurt when I think how long, and how much work, it must have taken to do it.

Chubby Grooves, aka Pro-Celebrity Golf, aka any number of other aliases was one of the first DJ’s that I remember being inspired by when I moved to Manchester, playing at the early Fat City nights amongst others, so it’s a great pleasure to big up his relaunched ‘Chopped Herring’ site, and also to plug the new release on Chopped Herring – BUT – when you see who’s on this LP, you’ll see regardless of any past history, you need to buy this record. Production by ?uestlove, Prince Paul, DOOM, and James Poyser and appearances from Masta Ace, Del, Michel Gondry (yeah, I know) amongst others says to me that you should make the effort to snap up one of the 250 pieces before they all go.
