The Motherfucking GasLamp Killer

Gas Lamp Killer

From the Shilo - We Make it Good website:

The Gaslamp Killer sign, seals, and delivers installment number 5 of our We Make It Good Mix series. Made up of weird world psych, hip hop and grunge chopped up seamlessly and then perfectly adhesed to a tough as nails skeleton of chest thumping kick drums, machine gun snares, and deafening bass drops; this is quite different from what we have put out thus far and could only come from the deeply murky mental environs of San Diego’s mostly cloudy turntable destroyer. Click below for a tracklist and a brief explanation from the Killer himself.

Kelvin Brown - Diggin on the Diaspora

We’ve had a fair few mixes from Kelvin Brown before on the site, so you’ll know what kind of quality you’re getting here straightaway. “Diggin on the Diaspora” is a mix of African and Brazilian stuff, and has been on the Electric Chair site before but only as a low quality stream. Here’s the super hifi fizzy version for your aural pleasure.

If you want a challenge; 2 of the tracks in the African/Brazilian mix aren’t from either Brazil or Africa - a prize to anyone who can tell us which ones. (Not a big prize. Perhaps just the warm feeling that comes from being right is your prize)

Don’t forget Kelvin’s playing at the NC BBQ on Sat 12th, after playing at the Garden Festival in Croatia. Should be good un.

Buddy Peace - Mixtapes

I have always been a fan of Buddy Peace & Zilla mixes. Never really sure what you are going to get. Apart from AIDS. You can’t get AIDS from music.

Anyway, check this blog.

I am enjoying them.

DJ Lego - Exile Mix

Time for another mix for you all i think, this time from acoustikAnarchy promoter Tom Clarke AKA Halftime AKA DJ Lego!, entitled -’what the chef was listening to when they were making Exile On Main Street mix’
Heres what he has to say about it-

This mix is a few of the tracks and tempo I like to play at aA (www.akoustikanarkhy.co.uk) which is a live music & DJ night we’ve being doing for the last few years. At aA the bands usually lean towards the guitar side of things and the DJ side is everywhere else - I play with (other DJs) Will and Charlie pretty much anything across the board musically.

aA started back in 1999 as an acoustic folk night and has kinda morphed into a much more live affair. We’re now based at The Deaf Institute each month (Speck Mountain and The Ruby Suns are in for May) but also have residencies in London and Dublin. The live night accompanies the record label which is up to it’s 35th release with Cats In Paris’s excellant new single ‘Foxes / Terrapins’ 7″ just out now - next up will be ‘its a buffalo’ on the label and ‘Longcut / F**k Buttons’ live at The Deaf Institute…

aA

It really is a super mix and it’s something a little differant to the mixes we have brought you in the past, hope you enjoy it. If you do then good, pop on back here soon, as we should have another one from Tom in the coming weeks.

Wax Poetics Radio with Monk-One Ft. The Mizell Brothers

Mizell Brothers
Looking for some quality music and informative chat to fill a hour or so of your life? Well you could certainly do a lot worse than heading on over to Wax Poetics Radio, where this month Northern Comfort fave Monk-one is joined in the studio by none other than The Mizell Brothers, here’s the blerb -

What siblings were behind Motown hits (ABC, I Want You Back!), breakbeat classics (Fallin’ Like Dominoes, Shifting Gears!!), disco bombs (Boogie Oogie Oogie, Love To The World!!!) and jazz-funk essentials (Harlem River Drive, Music Is My Sanctuary!!!!). Their songs have been covered by Erykah Badu, sampled by Pete Rock and re-edited by Danny Krivit. Being a Wax Poetics reader you should already know the answer. Absolute living legends who you will probably never get another chance to hear unless you run a vintage Porsche dealership in southern California, ladies and gents Wax Poetics Radio presents to you an exclusive pow wow with the legendary Mizell Brothers: Fonce, Larry and Rodney, along with an unparalleled selection of their classic compositions.

Mixtape 2.0

Its 1989 I am making a tape for a girl I like. Typically I choose UltraMagnatic, PE, Slick Rick, Demon Boyz etc.

She doesn’t ever talk to me again, which is a shame as now I will have to hunt her down and burn her house.

Anyway, mixtapes were the fulcrum of my existence for years and now there is a new e-version. Whether not this takes off I am unsure but the concept is pretty sweet.

Its simple too. Like that girl.

Hotpot radio with Broke N English, Northern Monkeys and DJ Woody

hot pot

Yup - a blast from the past from the NC archives. Here’s the 1st year anniversary of Hot Pot radio (coincidentally the Scruff/Treva Hot Pot reunion is being hosted by NC at the Salutation on the 12th April…) As you’d expect from the guests, quite a hiphop selection on this one, worth downloading purely for the live rap over Scruff’s ‘Ug’, which had me bouncing around the other day.

Getting into something - Donald Byrd mix

Getting into something - Donald Byrd mix

Lovely lovely lovely. Here’s a mix from Mr B of Getting Into Something - Sankey’s back room resident, Northern Disco guest, owner of excellent records, top DJ, nice fella and all-round music powerhouse. I’ll let him describe what you’re getting:

“The music of Donald Byrd has been in my life for nearly 20 years. The man is an absolute genius, a jazz educator, a trumpeter, a provider of hip hop samples, a Doctor of Music, a lawyer, an originator of jazz funk and a true gentleman and a Professor of the groove and one of the most prolific Blue Note recording artists.

I would like to share some of my favourite tunes he made in his ground breaking influential jazz funk years in the 1970s on the Blue Note Label. The tunes included cover soul jazz, disco, jazz funk and some of the most electrifying jazz ever recorded.

I have included some rare live recordings and some present day edits/mixes of well known classics.

This is the first in a series of mixes covering my musical influences. Next up - early Santana.

Thanks for listening,

Mike

(Credit must be given as ever to Chris E of Out Of The Gloom for the superb artwork)”

Really - download this one. I’m already looking forward Santana - Thanks Mr B!
